Microsoft introduced security changes starting in SQL Server 2005 which have made it more complicated for Forecaster's Current Users List (View | Current Users List) to interact with SQL Server. Anyone who tries to use this screen will see only themselves listed.

To make this screen work, users with the need to utilize the screen need to be granted permission within the SQL Server. To do this, have a dba or other authorized person follow these steps to grant the VIEW SERVER STATE permission within Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008:

  1. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. In the Object Explorer, navigate to a database in which the user is defined. Right-click on the database and choose Properties.
  3. Select the Permissions from the list in the Database Properties window.
  4. Click the link titled View Server Permissions.
  5. In the Server Properties window, select the appropriate user from the Logins or Roles list. Note that this permission is assigned to individual logins and is not appropriate for Roles.
  6. In the Explicit permissions for user list, scroll down to the View server state permission and check the box for this permission in the Grant column.
  7. Repeat for all users who need to be able to use the Current Users List.
  8. Click OK until you have returned to the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio main window.
  9. Users will need to close Forecaster and log back in before they will see the additional permissions.

Important Notes:

  1. Forecaster Web Access users who are logged in will NOT show up in the Current Users List.
  2. If you are using an Application Role with Forecaster, only Forecaster administrators will be able to use this feature. This is because the application role supersedes all permissions placed on individual users (i.e. any explicitly granted permission is removed from the user as soon as the application role is applied).
